The History of
Schmidt & Associates
Schmidt & Associates was established in 1981 by Del C Schmidt EA. Prior to opening his own business he had years of experience working with trusts and estates in addition to individual income taxes. As his business grew his son Norm Schmidt and daughter Kathy Rossow became associates and eventually took over the business. Norm Schmidt was an associate for over 35 years before retiring. Del is remembered for teaching classes about accounting for trusts and estates and the taxation of trusts. He was Past President of the Orange County Enrolled Agents. He is also remembered for his willingness to work closely with families with tax consulting needs.
Schmidt & Associates Today
Schmidt & Associates continues to thrive into the next generations. We are open all year to assist with issues that may arise. We also focus on continuing education in taxation required to maintain our Enrolled Agent status. We take pride in our willingness to work with people when navigating income taxation. If a question arises interpreting tax law, and a conflict exists between the taxing authorities interpretation of the tax law and other supportable positions, we will use our professional judgement in resolving these issues, and whenever possible, do so in the taxpayer’s favor. We also will do our best when interpreting trust agreements and assist trustees in following the parameters of a trust agreement or the California Probate Code.

Kathy Rossow, EA
Kathy Rossow, Del Schmidt’s daughter, has been an Enrolled Agent since 1998 and is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the California Society of Enrolled Agents, Orange County Chapter. She started with Schmidt & Associates in 1995. In addition to seminars on Fiduciary Accounting and Income Tax Returns, Kathy has taught various classes on the Taxation of Ministers. Kathy prepares Individual and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns, Federal Estate and Gift Tax Returns, and Fiduciary Accountings.
Debbie Schmidt Moore, EA
Debbie Schmidt Moore is the third generation of Schmidt & Associates as the granddaughter of Del Schmidt & daughter of Norm Schmidt. She became an Enrolled Agent in 2007 and has been working at Schmidt & Associates in various capacities since 1997. She is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the California Society of Enrolled Agents, Orange County Chapter. She prepares Individual and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns, Gift Tax Returns, Fiduciary Accountings for Trusts, Probate Estates, Special Needs Trusts and Conservatorships.
Kathryn Harrington, EA
Kathryn Harrington is the third generation of Schmidt & Associates as the granddaughter of Del Schmidt & daughter of Norm Schmidt. She became an Enrolled Agent in 2014 and has been working at Schmidt & Associates since 2010. She is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the California Society of Enrolled Agents, Orange County Chapter. Kathryn prepares Individual and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns, Federal Estate & Gift Tax Returns, and Fiduciary Accountings for Trusts, Probate Estates, Special Needs Trusts and Conservatorships.
Edie (Sylvia) Helfrick, EA
Edie Helfrick became an Enrolled Agent in 2019 and has been working at Schmidt & Associates since 2008 as our Office Administrator until she became an Enrolled Agent. She is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the California Society of Enrolled Agents, Orange County Chapter. Edie prepares Individual and Fiduciary Income Tax Returns. Gift Tax Returns and Fiduciary Accountings for Trusts, Probate Estates, Special Needs Trusts and Conservatorships. She also provides support for Office Administrative duties.
Debbie Wilson,
Office Administrator
Debbie Wilson has been with Schmidt & Associates since 2017 when she was hired to process tax returns. Due to her excellent work ethic and cheerful personality, she quickly became Office Administrator. She is the first point of contact at Schmidt & Associates and is ready to assist clients in any way she can. Debbie is an essential part of our office and is always willing to help wherever she is needed.
